What can IABC @ HPU do for you?

by Amanda Palmer, staff writer

IABC, the International Association of Business Communicators, has chapters throughout the United States and the world, including Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. HPU boasts the only IABC student chapter in Honolulu, begun in 1989.

IABC membership is a valuable tool for students seeking internships and paid positions in marketing, advertising, public relations and journalism, not-for-profits, and other business and communications careers. Today’s markets are competitive, and memberships in professional organizations such as the IABC enable people to continue their professional education and remain cutting-edge. Both the IABC@HPU and the IABC Honolulu chapters offer seminars and workshops to members to increase their knowledge and productivity.

As members of IABC@HPU, students have an opportunity to become part of three distinct communities. By doing service projects, students interact with people in the Honolulu community. Through listening to professional speakers at IABC@HPU seminars and attending IABC Honolulu chapter events, students gain valuable real-world experience and make contacts in the Honolulu business community. And by socializing at the IABC@HPU club meetings or fundraising on Fort Street Mall, student members are constantly interacting with peers in the HPU community.

Membership in IABC@HPU is a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Fall highlights include guest speakers with backgrounds in publication, television production, and leading not-for-profit organizations. Community service projects will benefit Friends of Foster Kids Hawai‘i, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America, and others.

IABC offers a generous student discount on annual membership dues, which are just $40.

ABC@HPU students can choose to work at IABC events in exchange for being able to attend for free, or they may pay student prices. As a bonus, IABC@HPU members are given a discount on their IABC professional chapter dues upon graduation. International students who join IABC@HPU may enjoy membership benefits in IABC chapters abroad at no extra charge.
