TIMSO active fundraising, networking

by Karin Wanscher

Members of the Travel Industry Management Student Organization (TIMSO) at HPU have been busy volunteering at several local travel industry functions. The first was the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) annual golf tournament held Oct. 18 at the Mid-Pacific Country Club in Lanikai.

The CMAA, an association that represents the club management professionals, offers scholarships every year to students who are pursuing degrees in travel industry management. Ten TIMSO members, along with Dr. Joe Patoskie, associate professor of TIM, volunteered to help with registration duties and also with the selling of tickets.

HPU TIMSO students had made several business connections and actually heard the words “job offer,” making for what many considered a successful event.

Then, on Oct. 23, TIM faculty Dr. Jerome Agrusa and Wendy Lam, and 15 TIMSO members, helped celebrate, in the spirit of the fall holidays, a FUNtastic Fall FUNraiser at Rumours Nightclub at the Ala Moana Hotel.

The four-hour event, sponsored by the HHSMA (Hawai‘i Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association), kept TIMSO members busy with silent auctions and baby sitting, but they still had time to team build, participate in games, and meet prominent figures in the travel industry.

The purpose of this fundraiser was to raise money for local charities—Special Olympics, Sisters Offering Support, Waikiki Community Center Care-a-Van, and the Variety School—and the HHSMA Educational Scholarship Fund, which supports TIM students.
