Miniature wooden hula
girls in a variety of dance positions decorate the ceiling.
Red and yellow surf- boards advertising beer companies decorate
the walls, bright neon signs light up the bar, and old Hawaiian-style
chairs and tables are a welcome resting place after a long
day at the beach. Seats line a drink counter that extends to
the width of the restaurant, facing out to Waikiki Beach. Inside
are tables for diners, and across the back wall, a bar.
Employees move around
in khaki shorts and bright- colored LuLu’s t-shirts.
Retired surfing pros sit at the bar reminiscing about old waves
they had ridden during their surfing days. The younger generation
is there, just in from the ocean, ready to eat after hitting
the waves. Hawai‘i’s visitors drop in all day long
and night too, to experience the world of island surfing.
LuLu’s Surf Club, famous in Tonga, Tazmania, and Kihei
(Mau‘i), has finally opened its doors to Waikiki. The restaurants
motto is “Red Carpet Service at Shag Rug Prices,” It
replaces Denny’s on the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua
avenues, around the corner from movie-on-the-beach. LuLu's, open
24/7, offers a full bar, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Island flavor is served up in a variety of dishes. Pupus include
shrimp quesadillas, Tahitian poke, crab cakes, buckets of clams,
squid, nachos, prime rib pupus, and much, much more. Breakfast
is $6.95 to $10.95 and is served from 4 a.m. for early risers
or late nighters, with entrees such as the “Lahaina”:
four banana pancakes garnished with fresh Hana bananas and macadamia
nuts topped with whipped cream, or the “Big Island Boy” breakfast,
for hungry guys: a rib-eye steak, three eggs, and three pancakes.
Dinner is a bit more with dishes ranging from $15.95 to $24.95.
Hot off the grill, LuLu’s serves up prime rib, 12-ounce
rib eye, and New York steaks. From the barbecue come baby back
ribs and chicken. Local dishes like Loco Moco, Spam and eggs,
and roll-your-own sushi complete the menu.
Great things are expected for LuLu’s with its Waikiki location
and liquor that only stops from the hours of 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.
LuLu’s Waikiki Surf is located on the corner of Kapahulu
and Kalakaua Ave. at 2586 Kalakaua Ave. (808) 926-5222
