Aloha from President Wright
with Chatt G. Wright

Hawai‘i Pacific University is proud of the international dimensions of the educational experience it offers students. Whether it is the varied number of countries from which our students and faculty come or the richness of our globally inspired curriculum, the University is a microcosm of the world we live in.

In addition to making the University an “international experience,” HPU also offers numerous opportunities for students to experience studying and living abroad through the Exchange Student Program. By enrolling in a Study Abroad (SA) course, our students are able to study at partner universities in a growing number of countries, including Australia, Japan, Korea and Thailand, in Asia, and France, Germany, Monaco and Sweden in Europe.

Through agreements with host universities in these countries, HPU students take courses taught in English, and classes taken abroad can be used to fulfill HPU degree requirements. Our students pay HPU tuition and, because they are enrolled here, they can use any scholarship, loan, or financial aid package for studying abroad through this program.

Attending an HPU-affiliated exchange university is an excellent way to learn a foreign language, immerse oneself in a different culture, make international friends, and learn an academic subject from a different perspective. A plus is the added dimension of travel to new and exciting places.

Not only do our American students value these experiences, but also numerous HPU international students use the exchange program to go to a foreign location to complement their HPU studies.

From my own perspective, one of the most exciting periods in my life was the time I spent as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa. It gave me unique insights into another part of the world, one I probably never would have experienced except for this opportunity. I hope that you, too, can have a comparable exposure to living and learning abroad by participating in our exchange program.

One of the missions of an HPU education is to cultivate global citizens. To be a true global citizen, you need to experience the world beyond your native borders. If you want to broaden your intellectual and cultural horizons, look into spending a semester abroad or consider participating in one of the short-term programs (e.g., summer study in France, Japan, or Mexico) offered under the auspices of HPU’s Exchange Student Program. You’ll then truly be on your way to becoming a global citizen.
