Vietnamese scholar at HPU international round table

HPU is considered an international learning community and was selected to to host an international roundtable Dec. 17 featuring a Vietnamese scholar and researcher from the Institute of Religion of the National Center for Social Sciences and Humanities.

Ms. Ngoc Thi Minh Nguyen spoke at the event, which was sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the HPU International Center Conference Room at 1164 Bishop St.

Nguyen, who holds a master’s degree in sociology, and undergraduate degrees in banking and finance, philosophy, social sciences, and humanities, led HPU faculty and students in discussions that included a review of issues concerning separation of church and state; the role of religion in American history; the core values of individual freedom of conviction, expression, and worship in U.S. society; diversity in a multicultural society; and the role of faith-based social service organizations in relation to community activism as demonstrated in volunteer efforts, educational programs, health care, and social initiatives.
