Students shear locks for love

Special to Kalamalama by Kelly Jo Collins

The Associated Students of Hawai‘i Pacific University (ASHPU) is sponsoring a hair drive Jan. 31, from noon to 3 p.m. on upper Fort Street Mall.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hair prostheses for disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss. The organization depends on donated ponytails and funds to provide the hairpieces, and ASHPU has organized a Hair Drive in order to help them continue their service to the children free of charge. Salon Bobbi N’ Guy has donated the services of their stylists who will come, on Jan. 31, to Fort Street Mall to cut and style hair free of charge for anyone willing and able to donate a ponytail to Locks of Love.

Donated hair must meet the following guidelines:

· It must be at least 10 inches in length.

· It must be bundled into a ponytail or braid (the stylists can assist in this).

· It must be free of hair damaged by chemical processing (dyed or permed is OK; bleach is not).

As publicity for the event, ASHPU Parliamentarian Kelly Collins and At Large Representative Kelly White donated their hair in December.
