U.N. Club and TIMSO team up on terror

by Therese Svensson, VP, U.N. Club

The United Nations club at HPU and Travel Industry Management teamed up to host a lecture on “Tourism and Terrorism,” Nov. 9 at the Sea Warrior Center.

The lecture, presented by Dr. James Primm, associate professor of political science, was jointly organized by Karin Wanscher, president of TIMSO, and U.N. Club Vice President Therese Svensson, and was sponsored by the College of International Studies. Members of both clubs as well as HPU faculty were in attendance.

Primm based the lecture on a paper he presented in Italy last summer entitled “Tourism and Terrorism—Two Sides of the Globalization Coin.”

Among the points Primm made was both tourism and terrorism require capital, communication, and transportation, and understanding terrorists does not necessarily mean supporting them. To get to the roots of terrorism, we must get into the minds of terrorists. Specifically, terrorist attacks on tourist spots are symbolic and political because they are actually attacks on the West.

Members of both clubs expressed a determination for more cross fertilization in the future.
