ITO on teaching diversity

by Tiffany Garrett, staff writer

The Intercultural Teachers Organization (ITO) at HPU sponsored a student panel on Nov. 19 at the Sea Warrior Center for International Education Week 2004. The theme was “An Overview of Education in Different Countries.” Topics included curriculum/course offering, options after completing compulsory education, and focused on five countries, represented by native students: Florian Rouch, France; Miranda Lam, Hong Kong; Sachiko Nakamoto, Japan; Supreeda Chotikul, Thailand; Jenny Lundahl, Sweden. ITO President Masaki Seo, from Japan, was the moderator.

Most of the panelists are graduate students in the Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (MATESL) program. Lundahl has been hired as an adjunct in communication at HPU, and is scheduled to teach Feature Writing this spring.

Each panelist spoke for about 10 minutes on education issues in their countries. The presentations were followed by a question and answer session.
