Chaplain's Corner
with Reverend Dale Burke

I’m often asked what the secret is to being successful in college. What is the best way to handle relationships, responsibilities, and financial needs while trying to answer the age-old question of what do I want to do with the rest of my life. It can be done! The secret is to steer a straight course and a little guidance can go a long way.

Writer Joe Rodriguez got my attention recently with an article he wrote about the keys to college success. He had some great suggestions, let me share a few:

· Be a total student. Even if you live at home or have to work part time, feel and think like a full-time student who lives on campus. Study is the highest priority. Hang out more on campus and less with friends who aren’t going anywhere.

· Fight loneliness, homesickness, and alienation. If you’re feeling blue, do as E.T. did – phone home. Seek out other students with similar interests. Joining a club or student organization is a great connecting point!

· Get to know students of different backgrounds. Don’t isolate yourself. Success comes to those who embrace change.

· Remember where you came from. This is important. The love and support you received from your family, teachers, and community are your source of strength.

I would add the importance of being connected to your faith community to find spiritual strength.

All of our local churches, temples, and synagogues are eager to welcome you. Let me know if you have questions.

Encourage one another to keep going and have a great semester!
