Film series explores global citizenship

Forwarded by Robert Bright, coordinator of Gen Ed Cocurricular Events

The General Education program continues its documentary film series with a spring schedule of 15 free films showcasing issues of global citizenship. Themes of the three-month series include the effect of fast foods, media critiques, and conflict in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine-Israel. The 12-week series, which begins Feb. 2 and runs through April 29, includes two Best Documentary Oscar-winners—“Hearts and Minds” (1974) and “The Fog of War” (2004; both explore the Vietnam War). Two others have received 2005 Best Documentary nominations: “Control Room,” which takes viewers inside the Al Jazeera television network as U.S. forces invade Iraq, and “Super Size Me,” in which filmmaker Morgan Spurlock tests the effects of multinational fast-food corporations on obesity by eating three meals a day for a month at MacDonald’s.

Films debut on Friday afternoons at 5:30 in Warmer Auditorium, where they will be introduced by a faculty or community member who specializes in the subject presented. For example, Denby Fawcett, a Hawai‘i journalist embedded with troops in Iraq, will introduce one of the Vietnam documentaries. Faculty from the sociology and psychology faculty will introduce “Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam” by drawing on their experience of counseling veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Free pizza will be served at the Friday openings, and students may bring their own beverage.
Most films will be shown five times, making it convenient for movies assigned for a class or for extra credit. Student-led discussions on each film will follow the noon and 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays screenings at the downtown Campus Crossroads and Wednesday 6:30 p.m. screening on the front lanai of the Academic Center at the windward Hawai‘i Loa campus.

Films in the series are shown free of charge and open to all HPU students, staff, faculty, and their guests. For more information, call 375-9775 Robert Bright, or Dr. Phyllis Frus, 566-2414.
