Housing office provides students a variety of services

HPU’s Housing and Residence department extends several housing options for incoming and continuing students.

 

Traditional residence halls located at the windward Hawai‘i Loa campus are one option. The on-campus housing complex provides full academic year accommodations (fall, winter, and spring semesters) and is capable of housing 212 students in six coed residence halls.

Full-time students (12 credits for undergraduate; 9 credits for graduate) who are formally admitted to HPU are eligible for the University residence halls. Priority is given to degree-seeking students, according to the Housing Office Web page on HPU Pipeline.

Housing costs for the fall or spring term normally range from $3,400 to $4,300 per semester. Prices for the current academic year are $4,260 for double occupancy and $3,405 for triple occupancy. These prices include a meal plan which provides 14 meals a week. Housing fees include water and electricity. Cable and telephone services are arranged for and paid separately by residents.

For off-campus housing, HPU uses the services of Cadmus Properties Corporation. Cadmus Properties is a professional real estate management company that, according to the Cadmus Properties Web site (cadmushpu.com), is “committed to making the process of securing safe, secure, and conveniently situated housing as uncomplicated as possible so that the student can focus on getting the most from their Hawai‘i Pacific University educational experience.”

According to Patrick Mayock, HPU’s director of Housing and Residence, in an average fall semester, Cadmus Properties houses between 325 to 350 students.

HPU has been working with Cadmus Properties for three and a half years and finds it advantageous for some students because, in contrast with on-campus housing, students can apply for residence for one semester at a time, according to Mayock. Cadmus matches each applicant with students of the same gender and similar interests.

Mayock says that HPU enjoys using Cadmus because of their access to the hotel market. They also manage homes, townhouses, and condominiums that students can be referred to later in their educational careers.

The current properties being utilized for HPU students by Cadmus Properties are the Continental Surf Hotel, Royal Garden Hotel, and, if needed, the Honolulu Airport Hotel, according to Mayock. All properties are located within a five-mile radius of the HPU downtown campus.

Additional services are provided by the downtown campus Housing Office. According to Mayock, the housing office can be used as a referral service and “provides information for students concerning off-campus housing,” including rental information directly from landlords and residents with roommate requests. The downtown Housing Office is located on 1164 Bishop St., (UB Building), Room #210.
