New TIM stduents get oriented to hospitality

by Kalamalama staff

One or two might have been there for the free pizza sponsored by the TIM program, but most of the 30 new Travel Industry Management majors were there to be enlightened and inspired to pursue a degree in the travel and tourism field, according to TIM Program Director Wendy Lam.

Lam welcomed the students to the Feb. 3 event, which was held in the TIM hospitality classroom in the TIM program center on the ninth floor of the 1164 Bishop St. building, by sharing with them her experiences in the TIM field. She emphasized the importance of finding the right balance of academics, work experience, extracurricular activities, and industry connections.

The students also got a chance to meet members of the TIM faculty and staff, including professors Dr. Jerome Agrusa, Wendy Coats, and TIM Administrative Assistant, Vivian Kiyonaga.

Travel Industry Management Student Organization (TIMSO) representatives Mikael Lindvall and Oystein Valen gave the students an overview of what TIMSO does and how the new students can benefit from being active members. The TIMSO representatives also hosted the organization’s traditional icebreaker game as well as informed the new students about the upcoming events this spring.
