Tennis teams take season openers

by Flavia Brakling, staff writer

The women’s and men’s tennis season just started and HPU tennis teams had their first challenge on February 14, when they played Chaminade at Hawai‘i Loa campus. Both HPU teams won, even though the 2005 men’s tennis roster included only four players.

According to Head Coach Henry Somerville, “The match was a good opportunity to see that both teams have to improve in doubles.”

The men’s tennis team actually has five players, four of them new. Carlos DelRio (Lagrange, Ill), who did not play on February 14; Gabor Boczonadi (Hungary); Tomas Boleman (Slovakia); and Harald Buerkle (Austria), who transferred from the HPU cross country team. In addition, the Sea Warriors retained the experience of Matay Pampulov from Austria, who was named to the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America Team.

Last season, HPU had a perfect record 28-0 and was ranked first in the nation until it had to be pulled out of postseason play because of eligibility problems.

The women’s tennis team also has new recruits for 2005 season: Cecilia Lundberg, Josefine Paulie, and Katarina Jacobson, all from Sweden; and Tina Klep, from Slovenia. The women lost five players from last year, retaining Shakti Stream (Kona, Hawai‘i) and Isidora Ljuri (Yugoslavia). Assistant Coach Sasha Parc said, “The team is very young, with four freshmen, but they all have played high-level competitions in their country and are very competitive.”

The Lady Sea Warriors finished 2004 season with a 12-12 overall record. They made it to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II West Regional Women’s Tennis tournament.

The expectation for this season, declared Somerville, is that both teams make into postseason play. “The Regional Championship is our goal,” he said.
