High school standout gets HPU scholarship

by Kalamalama staff

A senior at Leilehua High School, Angela Phoebe F. Layugan, is the recipient of a $1,000 tuition scholarship at Hawai‘i Pacific University.

Layugan received the award at the 7th Annual Honolulu Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce Awards and Installation Banquet held Feb. 4, at the Pacific Beach Hotel in Waikiki. HPU was a platinum sponsor of the event.

Layugan, who is active in school and in the community and has a 4.0 GPA for the past two years, hopes to pursue a career in nursing. She is an active member of the Leleihua volleyball team and National Honor Society.

“ I am honored and thankful I was offered this opportunity,” she said. “It helps connect me to my Filipino heritage.”

“ We are very grateful HPU has given her a chance for higher education,” said Rosalita Layugan.
Michelle Alarcon, professor of management at HPU, presented Layugan with the scholarship on behalf of HPU President Chatt G. Wright.

“ We believe in Angela,” said Alarcon. “We believe in what Angela has accomplished and has shown us at this early stage in life, and we believe in the future that she will hold for herself and everyone around her.”
