Few consumers are aware that the artificial sweetener, sucralose,
sold under the name Splenda, is the latest sugar substitute
to be used in a wide range of products. Although Splenda may
be the answer to many people’s diet problems, it can
also be extremely dangerous.
Splenda’s manufacturer’s motto “Made from
sugar, so it tastes like sugar,” is misleading. Splenda
is not made from sugar or any natural product. Splenda’s
sweetness comes from a chlorocarbon chemical that contains the
same chemical formulations as pesticides. While this makes it
sweeter than sugar, the process of producing Splenda is suspect.
According to the FDA, the final product contains
heavy metals (lead), arsenic, methanol, and chlorocarbons.
Manufacturers claim that Splenda helps people lose weight.
Because the sucrose is chlorinated, the body doesn’t recognize
it as a carbohydrate and allows it to pass without being absorbed.
However, FDA studies show that 11 to 27 percent of the contaminants
are absorbed into the body. These chemicals are found to concentrate
in the liver, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract. Splenda can
be found in nearly 3,500 food products, and not all these products
list Splenda as an ingredient. Also, none of them say the product
contains chlorine. Some of the popular products contain Splenda
are: Arizona Green Teas, Campbell’s V8 Splash, Gatorade’s
Propel water, Kool-Aid Jammers, Lucky Leaf Apple juice, Tropicana
Twisters, Breyers Carb Smart Ice cream, Good Humor Ice cream,
Hood Carb Countdown milk, Klondike Carb Smart ice cream bars,
and Orville Redenbacher microwave kettle corn.
Consumers have a right to know what is in the products they
buy. Even though few studies have been done on the effects
consumption, studies have been done on the effects of rats, mice,
and rabbits. The animals all exhibited signs of shrunken thymus
glands, enlarged liver and kidneys, atrophied spleen, increased
cercal weight, reduced growth rate, decreased number of red blood
cell amount, and diarrhea. Pregnant women have exhibited aborted
pregnancies and extended pregnancies.
In this continuing web of confusion over which chemical sweeteners
are safe to use, and which aren’t, it might be best to
stick with natural sweeteners and let the lab rats fight it out
for you. After all, said Dr. Joseph Mercola, a licensed physician. “There
