HPU team presents paper on sustainable tourism

by Kalamalama staff

Gui Albieri, HPU assistant director of International Admissions, and TIM professor, Dr. Jerry Agrusa, presented a paper on sustainable tourism at the International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic, and Social Sustainability at the East-West Center, Feb. 25-27. They have since been asked to submit “The Bottom-Up Approach to Sustainable Tourism: Prainha do Canto Verde Case Study,” for publication in the International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic, and Social Sustainability.

According to Agrusa, the paper outlines the research case study of Prainha do Canto Verde, a fishing village in northeast Brazil, which adopted the “bottom-up approach” to tourism development. The study demonstrated how allowing the local population to have input into the way tourism is implemented in an area results in a more sustainable tourism system.
