HPU volleyball plays Maui Tournament

by Flavia Brakling, staff writer

The HPU volleyball team placed second in a Maui tournament that featured two mainland Division I teams (George Washington University (GW), first place Pepperdine University), and HPU rival Brigham Young University—Hawai‘i.

The Maui Spring Volleyball Tournament, held at Baldwin High School Gym, Wailuku, on March 18 and 19, showcased HPU and GW in an opening event that the Sea Warriors won in four sets (27-30, 30-27, 30-15, and 30-11).

On the second day, the Lady Sea Warriors played constantly from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m a total of 10 sets. HPU’s first game was a two 25-point sets against tournament champ Pepperdine, currently ranked in the NCAA Division I top-10 teams. HPU lost the first set (23-25) and won the second one (25-23). Then, HPU beat GW for the second time (26-24 and 25-18), and in the third game HPU tied BYUH (26-24 and 20-25).

In the second part of the tournament, HPU played two-out-of-three sets. In a difficult match, HPU beat GW for the third time in three sets (22-30, 30-17, and 15-12).

In the final game, HPU lost to Pepperdine in one 30-point set (14-30), and took second place.
HPU traveled with only eight players: Barbara Martin, Melissa Sekigawa, Vera Oliveira, Melissa Aki, Nina Dudak, Flavia Brakling, Paula Koikopoulos, and Piikea Dudoit.
