A “who’s who” of Honolulu’s communication industry gathered at the Hale Koa hotel on April 9 to honor the outstanding achievements of their peers at the International Association of Business Communicators-Hawai‘i annual ‘Ilima Awards Banquet.

Five of the 40 winners represented HPU and took awards in three different categories: Video/Multimedia/Electronic Programs, Communication Programs, and Publication Design.
The first HPU award was won by Ann Worth, assistant director of Graduate Admissions, and Jacqueline Langley, assistant professor of communication and visual communication program coordinator for a graduate-level student recruiting video. Judges praised the way “the picture icon, displaying graduate students at their graduation, invites viewers to click and see the lifestyle and career goals achieved by students from around the world who have attained postsecondary degrees or certification.”

Jordan Santos, assistant director of interactive media at HPU’s International Center, also won an award for recruiting, this time using a print media ad, The Choice is Clear. This was the first time that a major ad for HPU used imagery other than student pictures or campus shots. The judges said, “The use of white space, minimal text, and strong visual imagery contributed to an ad that stood out among the standardized ads for college publications while remaining contemporary alongside ads found in publications such as Time and Newsweek.”

Nyssa C. C. Kushi, a graphic artist at HPU’s Administrative Support operations department, won for the program for Broadway Bound, HPU’s fall 2004 theater production. Set in Brooklyn, New York, in 1949, the play is the third part of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy of plays about his alter-ego, Eugene Jerome. Judges praised “the design for the overall theater logo of the play [which] focused on creating interest and providing information for potential audience members, utilizing colors, imagery, and materials appropriate to its theme.”

HPU’s final winner, Lianne Yamamura, director of development at HPU, entered the Publication Design category with the HPU Today winter 2004 issue. Knowing that alumni living in far away places would receive the winter issue of the magazine at the coldest time of the year, she designed a cover that was set on location to convey Hawaiian-style elements and incorporate the aloha spirit.

The judges said, “the design team executed the Hawaiian-style elements through the cover photo that was shot at Kaka‘ako Park on a sunny day with blue sky, white clouds, and swaying palm trees. The intention was to create an attractive, eye-catching nameplate and cover design to entice alumni to open the magazine and read the feature articles and University news.”
