By Karen Archibald, HPU Theatre Manager

This year’s annual event, a formal fundraiser for community theater, complete with dining, dancing, entertainment from the musicals from many of the theatres as well as the awards presentation, was held July 25 at the Koolau Ballroom, across from the windward Hawai‘i Loa campus. The council’s member theaters each select for the award one person who contributed outstanding service to their theaters during the year.

Theater Director, Joyce Maltby said she was happy to be able to recognize Karakatsanis for the many hours of work he contributed to this spring’s production of The Miser. “He was a tremendous help as my assistant director for the production,” said Maltby, “and he went even further as the sound operator at each and every performance.”

Karakatsanis, who graduated from HPU with a Bachelor of Science degree in May 2005 was a student in the Theatre Production class taught by Betty Burdick. Presently looking for a job for his OPT (Optional Practical Training), he said he valued his experience with the play process and would encourage other HPU students to inquire about how they could get involved.

“ I will be involved in the upcoming HPU production,” he said, adding that theater at HPU “is an environment that is full of pleasant surprises, interesting people to meet, and lots and lots of love!”
