Japan Consulate honors five HPU grads
in JET teaching program
Five HPU May graduates were among 39 selected
from Hawai‘i for one-year English teaching assignments
in Japan. Michael Blodgett, Heather Manning, Jeremiah Pagels,
and Mishalla Spearing, the four students who accepted positions,
were honored by Japan Consul General Masatoshi Muta at a July
29 send-off reception at Japan’s Honolulu Consulate.
The new Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) assistant English
teachers will be working for various regional boards of education

Ninety tables stretched along Fort Street Mall,
from Beretania Street to Subway, for the fall 2005 Club Carnival,
Sept. 16, “It was a huge success,” said Leadership

clubs participating this time, allowing it to be a much bigger

welcomes five new faculty
Five new faculty members join the HPU College
of Communication for the 2005-06 academic year.
Three of the arriving faculty members are replacements, one
for Dr. Varner, who retired in June, and two for Dr. Scott
Campbell and Dr. Faith Sparr. Two will fill new positions in

The Gulf Coast hurricanes have changed many lives
forever. Losing all your possessions, homes, jobs, family,
and a sense of community is beyond anything I can imagine.
I talked to a friend the day he evacuated Houston. His family
had been on the road five hours, and they had only gone 30
miles. They took only what was important and left everything
