HPU Athletics returns to the radio
The HPU Sports Beat has found a new home on
the radio dial. The show, formerly found on KUMU 1500 AM,
can now be heard live every Tuesday at 9 a.m. on Sports Radio
1420 AM with host Chris Hart.
On last week’s inaugural broadcast, guests on the show
included Head Volleyball Coach Tita Ahuna, senior volleyball
player Vera Olivera, and HPU’s new Athletic Director
Jill Ward.
Much of the show was devoted to the HPU women’s volleyball
team, which as of Oct. 13 had a 15-1 record and a No. 4 ranking
in the AVCA National Poll. Other topics included changes
in the school’s various athletic programs and the diversity
of student athletes and their HPU experiences.
Olivera, the 2004 PacWest Conference player of the year,
talked about how she had to overcome the language barrier
when she came to Hawai‘i and about how she prepares
for a match and sticks to a healthy diet in order to perform
at the highest level.
