Aloha from President Wright
with Chatt G. Wright

We also create an international perspective through programs of student and faculty exchanges. HPU students have the opportunity to participate in exchange and study abroad programs in such places as Australia, Japan, Brazil, France, Austria, and Mexico, among others, with more options for study abroad being developed. These programs help to strengthen language skills and to further develop cultural competencies which are essential to function in our increasingly global environment. They not only help enrich our learning community by bringing students from all over the world, but they also ensure academic excellence by giving HPU students and faculty a chance to see and experience the world.

One important exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government is the prestigious Fulbright program, which offers grants for graduate students and faculty to study and research abroad. HPU has hosted many visiting scholars and graduate students under the Fulbright program, and many of our faculty are past recipients of Fulbright grants. Dr. Carlos Juárez, dean of HPU’s College of International Studies, was recently awarded a Fulbright grant to the Czech Republic, and this current academic year we are hosting a visiting Fulbright scholar from Ukraine, Dr. Marina Tsehelska, a specialist on English language.

In spring and summer 2006, HPU will also host another Fulbright scholar, Dr. Pavel Pseja, a political science professor from the Czech Republic. Other HPU faculty Fulbrighters include Dr. Grace Cheng (political science), Dr. Ed Klein (applied linguistics), Dr. Niti Villinger (management), Dr. James Whitfield (communication), and assistant professors of ESL Sally La Luzerne-Oi and Catherine Sajna.
