With Barbara Burke

Brakling, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is double majoring in journalism and visual communications. Her favorite courses are those that involve “anything to do with writing.” Brakling especially likes news writing and feature writing, and she is the sports editor for Kalamalama. She is considering working in television after graduation.

Brakling has a 3.36 GPA and says that “setting priorities and good time management” are keys to her success both in the classroom and on the volleyball court.

In 2004-05, Brakling was named HPU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also named to the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference Academic All-Conference team. During her free time, she enjoys dancing, reading, listening to music, and meeting new people.

Martin, a junior from Curitiba, Brazil, is a nursing major. Before coming to HPU, she attended Universidade Tuiuti do Parana in her home country where she became interested in the field of physical therapy. Her favorite course so far in the HPU nursing program is anatomy. After graduation, Martin hopes to stay in Hawai‘i and find a nursing position that specializes in rehabilitation medicine.

Martin has a GPA of 3.20. She credits teamwork for much of her academic success. “I have classmates who help me keep up with the work when I am away on road trips,” Martin said. “When studying at home, the girls on the team help each other a lot.”

When not in class or on the volleyball court, Martin enjoys dancing, watching movies, and meeting new people.
