Public museum exhibits local artists

Hawaiian culture is expressed in various forms of dance, food, ‘ohana, and art. These are all celebrated at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, located at 250 S. Hotel St., which showcases Hawaiian spirit and heritage as it is expressed in art. The museum supports many local artists, coordinates community events, and expresses for the whole community the essence of Hawaiian culture. In addition to its upcoming exhibition, Art in Public Places, the museum sponsors a regular series of programs: Live from the Lawn, Gallery Talks, and Meet the Artist. Crimson Gold:
Film depicts harsh reality of Iranian life

“Extreme Fiber” is not necessarily an appropriate title for the Hawai‘i Handweavers’ Hui art exhibition currently on display at the HPU art gallery. This is because some of the handcrafted materials are actually wearable. One of the more striking pieces is a lightweight coat that dangles from the ceiling. Done by Helen Friend, the piece is titled Cut Your Coat According to the Cloth. The coat is constructed of netting, organza, and newsprint. Snippets of different phrases such as “Change Your View,” “Be Confident & Smile Again,” and “No Regrets” and several other positive words were neatly stitched into the coat with red and black zigzag stitching.
