Talent show energizes students, staff
“The first-place winner is, Zaysha Labrador,” announced
emcee Samuel John at the climax of the first, of what HPU hopes
will become an annual talent show. “Da Freakshow,” staged
April 28 at the Hawai‘i Theatre, showcased 23 talented
HPU students and faculty who brought a mixture of dancing and

Student
athletes honored at award banquet
On their one day off from the field or gym,
HPU student athletes traded in their running shoes for sandals
and their jerseys for dresses or aloha shirts, as they dressed
up for the annual student athlete banquet. On May 3, approximately
300 student athletes gathered at the Radisson Prince Kuhio

Silverman McDunn accepted a Koa Anvil Award from the Hawai‘i
chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, July
20 at the Waikiki Beach Marriot Resort & Spa. The award,
which recognizes public relations excellence in Hawai‘i,
was for the publicity campaign that promoted HPU’s
40th Anniversary and the University events that celebrated

New natural sciences dean also VP for research

Dr. Alissa J. Arp was appointed HPU’s vice
president for Research and dean of the College of Natural Sciences.
|
Arp will implement and oversee an
active research program at HPU as well as further the integration
of HPU faculty, students, and staff at the Oceanic Institute.
Additionally, she will develop new graduate programs in the marine
sciences and develop additional extramural funding in support
of faculty research at OI.
Arp is a 24-year veteran in the marine
sciences and has explored the ocean floor to more than 1.5 miles
in depth during eight deep-sea dives in research submersibles. |

Prior to joining HPU, Arp served as director of the Romberg Tiburon Center for
Environmental Studies at San Francisco State University’s estuarine research
laboratory. She also worked as a professor of biology at SFSU, where she ran
a productive research program
“ Dr. Arp joins HPU with international recognition for her expertise in
the physiology of life in challenging environments,” said Jessica McDunn,
HPU University Relations officer. Arp is also responsible for “recruiting
and promoting diverse and interdisciplinary faculty of national and international
reputation, and securing millions of dollars in grants, donations, etc,” McDunn
added.
Arp earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of California,
Santa Barbara, and post-doctoral associate at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution
of Oceanography. |
