The Sea Warriors began with a preseason exhibition game Nov. 4 against the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa Rainbow Wahine at the Stan Sheriff Center. HPU lost 104-42, but they never gave up against the physically larger UH team.

The season kicked off officially at Master’s College in Santa Clarita, Calif. Kelly Morey led the team with 14 points, and Jocelyne Norris succeeded in a team-record seven rebounds. The 94-48 loss didn’t dampen the ladies’ spirits as they continued their road trip to Bakersfield, where they fell to Division I Cal State Bakersfield 106-44. Highlights for the HPU team included Norris and Ashley Jenkins scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.

On the third day of consecutive games, the Sea Warriors faced Cal State San Bernardino. The women lost a close 50-36 game, but were rewarded with a day of rest before playing the final game of their tour against Cal State Los Angeles. This was the hardest fought yet. Ashley Jenkins had a great game with 24 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Shannon Miyashiro finished 12 points and six rebounds. The final score: HPU lost

Liz O’Brien, head coach for the women’s team, could not be reached for comment.

The team consists of Ashley Jenkins, Lauren Lawson, Chelsea McQuate, Natalie Mitchell, Shannon Miyashiro, Kelly Morey, Jocelyne Norris, Mandy Llamedo, Jordan Tangonan, Kanani Thomas, Rachel Hancock, Constance DeCaires, and Maria Roller.

Despite the losses, the team has continued to show improvement and is likely to become a strong force under the guidance of Liz O’Brien.
