HPU’s Art Gallery recently announced its exhibition schedule for 2007-08 and opened its first exhibition of year, paintings by Janetta Nap, July 22 at the windward campus.

Nap presents, she said, “selections from a body of recent paintings exploring organic and scientific themes characterized by rich and subtle mixtures of color and brushwork.”

The HPU Art Gallery has exhibted the work of local artists since Hawai‘i Loa College and HPU merged about 15 years ago. This year’s exhibitions offer a wide variety of themes and art forms, from DNA: Digital Nature Analog to A Sky Inside Me, mixed up with HPU’s own annual juried exhibition of art from artists within the University community.

Acording to Lynne Ledward, administrative assistant for Student Affairs and coordinator for the gallery, artists for exhibitions are selected at an annual meeting of an HPU Art Gallery Board (consisting of HPU staff, local artists, and gallery curator, Sanit Khewhok). The board reviews many portfolios before selecting a slate of artists for exhibition in any given year.

Ledward said she enjoys all the exhibits and is not particular looking forward to any single exhibition. “I know they are all good,” she said.

The HPU Art Gallery is located on the winward campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 687-7017.
