After decades of groundbreaking research, the Oceanic Institute (OI) is now working with the private sector to apply this research and is helping to make Hawai‘i a world leader in offshore aquaculture and sustainable shrimp framing. OI researchers are working with two offshore fish farms in Hawai‘i to refine and commercialize fish rearing technologies and in providing fingerlings and eggs.

Two HPU graduates, Paul Ahina and Dustin Moss, now work as researchers at OI and are helping to advance shrimp aquaculture throughout the world. They are among the best in their field and are highly sought by industry for their expertise in culturing shrimp. Over the past year, OI shrimp researchers have been traveling extensively to advance shrimp aquaculture by incorporating OI’s breeding and production technology in commercial shrimp farms in Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and China.

Incidentally, several OI employees working in fish aquaculture are also graduates of HPU. One is currently a graduate student in HPU’s new Master of Science in Marine Science Degree Program. They are working on how to improve the production of live food for fish when they hatch, a major challenge in raising most marine fish. All are contributing to advancements and growth in this rapidly expanding field of study.

OI scientists and HPU students are involved with many other exciting programs and projects. For example, OI scientists are working with various research partners to find ways to use local agricultural products as feeds for shrimp and fish. One of the most promising new areas of research is the use of co-products of the biofuels production as feed ingredients. For instance, oil can be extracted from algae and the remaining biomass made into a high quality feed. This will help to add value to the process making it more affordable and the industry more sustainable. In addition, OI scientists and HPU students will be evaluating the impacts of a recent ban on lay gill nets, fish stock enhancement, and other marine management measures in Hawai‘i.

HPU Career Opportunities

The opportunities for careers in aquaculture and the marine sciences are practically limitless. So much is at stake in the race to understand how to better manage and preserve the world’s ocean resources. As we grapple with the challenges of a growing population struggling to live on a planet with limited resources, knowledge of the marine sciences will become even more critical. HPU students and graduates have an exceptional opportunity to be part of the solution.

Only a few of the top schools in the nation offer a high quality marine science education program and most of them cannot match the array of facilities, research capabilities, and hands-on learning opportunities at Oceanic Institute. The programs being offered via this new affiliation between Oceanic Institute and Hawai‘i Pacific University is truly unique.
