Hawai‘i Pacific University is pleased to announce that John Hart has been promoted to associate dean of the College of Communication, effective this fall. Dr. Hart has been the assistant dean of the College since 2002. He holds the academic rank of professor and has been with HPU since 1999. Hart’s Ph.D. in Communication Studies was awarded from the University of Kansas.

As associate dean, Dr. Hart will assist the dean with the leadership and management of academic, curricular, and faculty matters in that academic unit.

Dr. Hart is a well-known figure in local and national media in both the news and entertainment fields. He was a confidant of the late guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan for almost a decade. Rolling Stone Senior Editor, David Fricke, considers Hart “a superb, much admired educator for his knowledge of the media and the breadth and quality of his contacts in the music and media industries.” Hart’s contacts have brought such major media figures as Fricke, MTV chief correspondent Kurt Loder and legendary drummer Carmine Appice to appear at the school.

Dr. Hart is a popular media critic for local and presidential political campaigns and debates. He is often quoted by local print and broadcast media in both news and popular culture stories.

Hart’s scholarly research is in the area of myth in popular culture. He has been invited to testify to the United States Senate and the National Parks Service regarding the public policy issues of the naming of national monuments. He was a featured guest on the History Channel’s Live from Pearl Harbor Emmy- nominated special and a featured speaker at the 60th and 65th anniversary Pearl Harbor Attack Symposiums.

His essays have earned him the Lawrence A. Frost Literary Award and an alternative History Book Club Book of the Month selection. His Custer and His Times: Book Four volume was nominated for the Robert M. Utley Western History award. Hart’s students have worked in educational partnership with the National Parks Service and the USS Arizona Museum Association in developing projects such as educational outreach materials and the redesign of the memorial admission tickets.

Hart is a former debate coach, having coached nationally ranked teams and authored numerous articles and handbooks on debate theory and practice. He is the co-editor of Advanced Debate, called by the Cross Examination Debate Association “the primary text relied upon by scholars” in the discipline.
