Dear EarthTalk: I’ve heard about
the die-off of coral reefs due to global warming. I’ve
also read that coral reefs release carbon dioxide (CO2),
when they die. Isn’t that a double whammy that increases
the CO2 in the atmosphere?

marine science program
After decades of groundbreaking research, the
Oceanic Institute (OI) is now working with the private sector
to apply this research and is helping to make Hawai‘i
a world leader in offshore aquaculture and sustainable shrimp
framing. OI researchers are working with two offshore fish
farms in Hawai‘i to refine and commercialize fish rearing
