Platinum recording artist Chris Brown performed live at the Neal Blaisdell Arena Feb. 2 to a sold out crowd of roaring fans, young and old. Known as the prince of hip-hop for his chart-topping hits, skilled choreography, and charming smile, Brown brought all these elements to Honolulu in a unique chemistry that brought the audience to its feet. His tour, Up Close and Personal, with fellow hip-hop artist Bow Wow, began in December 2007 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has spanned the United States. Performing hits like, “Run It,” “Yo (Excuse Me Miss),” “Outta My System,” and his current number one hit on the Billboard hot 100 charts, “Kiss Kiss,” a collaboration with fellow hip-hop sensation T-Pain.

The concert started at 8 p.m. and began when the darkness of the arena was quickly replaced by an explosion of brilliant lights and colors and Brown suspended in mid-air from the roof of the arena. He somersaulted to the stage where he was quickly joined by back-up dancers who helped him perform his first hit of the night “Wall to Wall.” The dancing and choreography was sensational and filled with so much energy that Brown had to slow it down with a song he dedicated to the ladies in the audience, “With You.”

HPU alum Makana Shook said, “Chris Brown was an amazing performer. His singing and dancing talents go well beyond his years. I feel that he is a mature and multi-faceted young man who has a great future ahead of him. I see him becoming the Michael Jackson of his generation.”

Even though Brown is only 18 years old, he isn’t shy about his good looks and charm. He had all the ladies at the concert screaming and all the guys wishing they were him. The concert lasted until 10:30 p.m.
