HPU’s national championship cheer program sent 18 cheerleaders to the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) College Nationals competition at Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida, January 14-21.

Five coed pairs (one man, one woman) and two all-girl teams (four women) from HPU qualified to compete against teams from 184 colleges and universities at this year’s event, which will air in the next few weeks on ESPN2.

Five coed pairs competed

(1) April Huliganga (psychology, jr.) Kihei, Maui; Matt Kelley (public relations sr.)-Houston.
(2) Jessica Borrego (business, soph.) Fullerton, Calif.; Ryan Baker (marketing, jr.) Columbus, Ohio.
(3) Chelsea Ross (nursing jr.)-Spring, Texas; Darnell Brown (psychology sr.)-Lewisville, Texas.
(4) Danielle Luciano (biochemistry, jr.) Dallas; Matthew Callahan (psychology, sr.) Orlando, Fla.
(5) Melanie Gomez (business, soph.) Houston,Texas; Travis Robillard (psychology, jr.) Wichita, Kansas.

Two all-girl teams competed

(1) Tara O’Sullivan (fr.) Houston, Texas; Lauren Loeb (fr.) Beaumont, Texas; Chelsey Kannan (accounting, fr.) Snellville, Georgia; Heather Turner (communication, soph.) Jonesboro, Georgia.
(2) Erin Watters (communication graduate student) Wadsworth, Ohio; Lauren Haines (psychology, sr.) Portland, Oregon; Nicole Orcutt (soph.) Gilbert, Arizona; Savanna Sibley (justice administration, sr.) Las Vegas, Nevada.

In its 2006 debut at the UCA competition, the HPU All-Girl Stunt Team won the national title. The HPU Coed Cheer Team will defend its five consecutive national titles at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Championships in April, when HPU’s Small Coed Cheer Team (consisting of no more than four males) will also defend its three straight national titles. The HPU Dance Team is also a reigning 2007 National Dance Alliance (NDA) national champion, having previously won in 2006 and 2004.
