The Bernie O Poetry Show was one of the attractions during opening week at the new HPU Bookstore at 1132 Bishop Street. On Oct. 28 and 30, faculty author Bernard Ostrowski signed copies of his books, A Bernie O. Poetry Show, Volume 1 and 6 and his CD, Jazz From Hawai‘i.

Ostrowski received his master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Ostrowski, in addition to being a full-time instructor in psychology at HPU, owns and is director of the Honolulu consulting firm Psychol-ogy for Everyday Life. He was named the winner of the Trustees’ Award for Teaching Excellence at the spring 2004 University commencement ceremony, an annual award bestowed on a faculty member who best exemplifies the ideals of distinguished teaching.

Ostrowski has taught psychology at HPU for 25 years. The Bernie O. Poetry Show is a collection of six booklets of poems, each focusing on a different yet intertwining theme and jazz rhythm. The collection includes:

Book 1: The Human Condition
Book II: Sweet Sam
Book III: Jazz Fan
Book IV: Hawai‘i
Book V: Chuckles
Book VI: Risqué Ruminations

Ostrowski produced and composed several songs on the CD Jazz from Hawai‘i, which features the talents of several local artists including, Tennyson Stephens, Azure McCall, David Choy, and Ken Ebo.

Ostrowski’s goal for his poetry and music is to “try to be idealistic about a less than ideal world, and to generate respect for individual differences.”

Customers received a leather bookmark with each purchase of Ostrowski’s books during the event.
