HPU students study Spanish in Mexico's Morelia

1,100 miles south of San Diego, Calif. is Morelia, Michoacán. It’s a gem: Streets paved with cobblestones, ancient ornate cathedrals, and friendly people. The rustic appeal of old Mexico combines with a modern architecture, keeping alive the ancient village roots of this small, modern city. An area rich in history, Morelia provides both a glimpse into Mexico’s past and a peek into its future. And HPU’s Spanish students get to enjoy it while earning academic credit too!

ASHPU determined to find answers to many challenges

At its Jan. 28 meeting, ASHPU, HPU’s student government organization, concentrated on the upcoming talent show DaFreak Show, a possible continental breakfast, and the pending Feb. 4 biannual meeting in which unoccupied positions will be filled.

Helens-Hart’s debating skills recognized internationally

Rose Helens-Hart, director of debate at HPU, recently returned from Cork, Ireland where she was an adjudicator for the World Universities Debating Championship 2009. The competition featured over 300 teams from 43 different countries. Helens-Hart was one of four women selected to contribute to Women’s Day, a day to encourage further participation of women in debating and to raise the profile of women in the world debating community. The equity officer of the event, Tony Murphy, said that Helens-Hart’s “role as the director of the Debate program at Hawai‘i Pacific University and as the convener of the Pan-Pacific Championship deserves recognition for spreading the values and discourse and free speech.” .
