Dr. John Hart, HPU professor of Communication, has been nominated for the 2009 Western Writers of America Spur Award for editing Custer and His Times: Book Five (2008).
The volume is the fifth in a series commissioned by Little Big Horn Associates designed to present the most recent research about the Battle of the Little Bighorn, George Armstrong Custer, the times in which he lived, and their legacy. Hart also edited Book Four (2002) in the series.
Hart’s volume was nominated in the Best Western Nonfiction Historical category. Four individual essays in the volume were nominated in the category of Best Western Short Nonfiction.
Hart’s essays have earned him the Lawrence A. Frost Literary Award, History Book Club: Book of the Month selection, and a nomination for the Robert M. Utley Western History Award.
Spur Awards are given annually for distinguished writing about the American West, and are among the oldest and most prestigious in American literature.
Past Golden Spur Award winners in include Larry McMurtry for Lonesome Dove, Michael Blake for Dances With Wolves, Glendon Swarthout for The Shootist, and Tony Hillerman for Skinwalker.
